Personal History
Sharon enjoyed a multitude of hobbies and interests over her lifetime of activities. For her, there was never enough time in the day for all she wanted to do.
Sharon grew up on a farm in West Lafayette Indiana. She and her sister Jacquie loved horses, dogs, and cats. Both of them had plenty of animals on the farm which they often raised from birth, took care of, and enjoyed.
Sharon raised several litters of German Shepherd puppies with Bill and their children when they lived in Lynchburg and Springfield, and sold them with their registered breeding paperwork. One of her puppies was sold to the Monks of New Skeet, in New York, who bred dogs to support their monastery work.
She liked designing plants outside around the house, both inside and outside, and taking care of them throughout the year. She also liked planting and harvesting vegetables in her garden.
Sharon liked sewing, hand quilting, machine quilting, paper piecing, needlepoint, cross stich, painting, and drawing, and was very talented in all these activities. She entered many of her quilts in local shows in Illinois and national shows around the country, and participated in the quilt shows. She won many awards for her work. She was interviewed on television about her quilting hobby. She taught quilting lessons to adults at the Peace and Applique shop in Rochester, IL, and she took the classes required to be a Quilt Appraiser. Many of Sharon’s favorite quilts were appraised and valued highly.
Like her mother, Sharon enjoyed playing puzzle games on her computer. She was often the Number 1 puzzle player on the web site for players all over the world.
Sharon and many of her Farmingdale Presbyterian Church friends made dozens of baby quilts and hundreds of tiny knitted baby stocking caps and donated them to the Springfield St. John’s Hospital for premature babies. The knitted NICU stocking hats and handmade NICU quilts were her Farmingdale Presbyterian Church’s Mission Projects. In 2025, Sharon made over 300 of the NICU hats by herself alone. Some of the knitted caps were sent to missions in New Mexico for other premature babies. The NICU Quilts and NICU Knitted Hats that Sharon made are just a small example of her artistic talents and skills.
On Bill and Sharon’s 39th anniversary, May 15, 2015, Sharon’s mother called to wish her a happy anniversary. Sharon was not at home when the call was placed, but her mother left a recorded voice message on the phone. Sharon later created a video to memorialize her mother by playing the voice message recording while she focused her phone on a framed portrait of her mother and father cutting their wedding cake. This phone call recording contains the only audible memory she has of her mother’s voice.
